Black Lives Matter makes $200,000 HBCU athletics investment

by admin

Black Lives Matter Sports is turning its vision for social equity into tangible action by investing nearly 200,000 dollars into Historically Black Colleges and Universities athletics, various nonprofits, and grassroots community initiatives. Founded by Cicley Gay, the chairman of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, the initiative seeks to leverage the inherent power of sports as a tool for long term opportunity. By directing funds toward these sectors, BLM Sports intends to bridge the gap between the high visibility HBCUs currently enjoy in the national spotlight and the actual resources available to their student athletes.

A significant portion of this effort involves direct grants totaling 166,000 dollars distributed across 19 different organizations. This diverse group includes well known entities like the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation and the Atlanta Dream, alongside specialized groups such as the Black College Gamers Association and various youth mentoring movements. While the specific HBCU athletic programs benefiting from the fund have not been named individually, the goal remains clear: providing student athletes with better exposure and developmental tools that will serve them long after their collegiate careers end.

Cicley Gay emphasized that while sports possess a unique ability to unite people, that influence must be extended beyond the boundaries of a court or field to effect real change. She argued that it is unfair to expect community organizations and university programs to tackle systemic societal challenges without providing them with the necessary financial backing. For Gay, this investment is an acknowledgment that building stronger families and more resilient communities requires consistent, material support rather than just symbolic gestures.

Beyond the campus environment, this funding strategy focuses heavily on mentorship and female empowerment through partners like Grind Pretty and Josie’s Girls. By embedding resources within organizations that are already operating on the ground, BLM Sports hopes to amplify existing efforts in youth development and family stability. This comprehensive approach suggests a belief that athletic success is deeply intertwined with broader community wellness and academic support.
